Macarons and sweet treats in Barcelona

Macaroons (or Macarons!) are the new cupcake! With no Ladurée in sight in Barcelona, here´s a list of where to find some of these delicious meringue treats, as well as some other sweet surprises...

1) From the pâtisserie expert, Enric Rosich, come two boutique shops specialising in macarons. The first is just off Passeig de Gracia in the centre of town and makes a perfect mid-shopping stop. The other is near the MNAC and Plaza España in the shopping centre Las Arenas. Both offer colourful, quality macarons and make a great gift.
Nearest tube: Diagonal & Plaza España

2) Further from the centre but on the way down to the beach at Barceloneta, you can choose between a delicious, sweet macaron or a big old home-made ice-cream at Vioko. You can buy them individually or in cute boxes of 7,12 and 40. They also specialise in chocolate and cakes, so it´s definitely worth making the stop.
Address: Barceloneta

3) If you´re living in Barcelona then you have to try this option: For the most amazing macarons, order a delivery from http://www.mariaselyanina.com and choose from a variety ranging from lime and basil to peach and thyme. Delicious, fresh and 1.50 euro each and sold in boxes of 18 or 24. No need for a special occasion, just treat yourself!

4) Down in the Born area? Then head to Bubó for a quick fix macaron and café con leche whilst sitting on the terrace and people watching opposite the beautiful Santa Maria del Mar cathedral. They also offer delicious small cakes and sandwiches. They also have a boutique in Pedralbes and anothe cafe/restaurant in Bulevard Rosa (see website).

Nearest tube: Jaume 1

5) Moving away from macarons, but staying with the sweet theme, I want to introduce a cool and innovative sweet shop in Barcelona that makes buying and giving sweets as presents even more fun than normal. The cleverly marketed Happy Pills shops are immaculate and colourful.  You choose the size of plastic jar you want and then fill it up with a wide variety of sweets (they even encourage squashing them down to get more in!). You then choose a Happy Pills sticker to personalise your purchase even more.  With quotes such as "Pink clouds for grey days" and "For a bad hair day", these little jars of sweets make great gifts to take back home. With 4 shops around the city, they´re becoming more popular by the day. See address below for the most central shop.

Nearest tube: Liceu or Catalunya

  1. I cannot believe what I am reading here... The macarons from Enric Rosich are frozen, I saw them unpacking macarons from boxes... Definitely not the place where to buy it!

  2. Oh, I love them. I think they´re the closest thing to Ladurée macarons and I´ve tried quite a few! Which place do you think do the best ones in Barcelona?

  3. In Barcelona you can also buy macarons at McDonald's! The McDonald's opposite of the guadi house, near to plaza Catalunya has great macarons in 6 kinds, for 0,75€ each. Great option!
